Get Involved

Here are 10 ways you can support pretrial justice in your community.

System Savvy

Learn the role that judges, sheriffs, prosecutors, and other officials play in shaping pretrial systems and decarceration efforts.

Rock the Vote

Vote in every election. Ask candidates about their positions on money bond, detention, and diversion from jail. Support voting rights for folks who are detained while awaiting trial.

Bills, Y’all

Stay aware of bills impacting pretrial reform. Ohio is currently considering a constitutional amendment to continue to tie money to bail.

Research, Stat!

Use this handy map to find
your county’s rate of pretrial
detention and jail size.

Follow the Money

Consider how much money is spent on jails instead of schools, community centers... you get the idea.

Community Support

Learn about the participatory defense movement where community members stand up for people in court.

Watch It

Join (or start) a local courtwatching initiative to observe practices in action and hold courts accountable.

Group Think

Connect with justice-minded arts
and advocacy groups in your area. Here are some suggestions in Ohio.

Give Back

Donate to organizations that advance racial equity and pretrial justice. (If you’d like to support PJI, we’d be grateful.)

Connect the (Historical) Dots

Know the history of slavery and its connection to mass incarceration.
If you’re white, unpack and reject white supremacy culture.
Consider participating in a 21-day Racial Equity Challenge with your
friends, family or colleagues.
